The best way to ensure we are evolving in our craft and in theatre is to help cultivate new Black womxn writers to tell important stories. We will be launching the Sister Cipher, which is a writing circle for Black womxn in creative writing, drama, and performance. In this space the womxn will work for the year developing their work with the care and guidance of house dramaturges, directors, and playwrights. At the end of the year, the sisters will be able to nominate a colleague and her work to be considered for the fellowship.

What (why) is the Sister Cipher?

The Sister Cipher is a collective of Black womxn interested in playwriting. We gather once a month to practice writing plays, learning about structure, format, style, techniques and best practices and gathering feedback from one another on current pieces. We believe it’s important for Black womxn playwrights of all levels to have access to a safe space with peers whom they can relate to, and a space where they can feel heard and seen. By the end of the program, each member should have been able to craft at least one short play, and feel encouraged to submit their writings to play festivals and contests to get their work out there and produced on a stage!

The Sister Cipher for those who:

  • You identify as a womxn or gender-nonconforming person of African descent who is interested in playwriting.

  • You want to try playwriting for the first time, or maybe push your playwriting to the next level, or are experienced in the craft but seek community among Black womxn playwrights.

  • You’re willing to commit a couple of hours once a month for an online or in-person meeting with your fellow playwrights!

  • You’re ready and willing to give yourself space to WRITE!

  • You’re ready to be vulnerable and share your work with others as well as support others in their writing.
